After a quintessentially Royals comeback in the ninth inning, Kansas City scored the go ahead run on a quintessentially Royals set of plays in the 12th inning and won the World Series for the first time since 1985.With one out in the 12th, Jarrod Dyson—pinch running for World Series MVP Salvador Perez, who singled—stole second and moved to third on an Alex Gordon ground out to first. Then Christian Colon—the winning run from the 2014 12-inning Wild Card win over Oakland, but still a guy who had not played all postseason, and had not driven in a run since September 20th—drove Dyson in with a single to left field.
Then Murph Murphed and it only got worse for the Mets from there. The ball took a wicked hop on Murphy, to be fair, but it's still one he's got to get. It's amazing. The guy went from world beater to…whatever the hell this is, in the blink of an eye.
The error put two men on and Alcides Escober drove in Colon to give the Royals a 4-2 lead will still only one out. The Mets then walked the bases loaded and brought in Bartolo Colon, who gave up a bases-clearing double to Lorenzo Cain to make it 7-2. The Mets eventually got out of the inning and only Michael Conforto mustered a hit before Wade Davis struck out Wilmer Flores for the final out and the celebration got under way.
