Listen and Learn: Jeremy Fish's Multimedia Cartoon Portraiture

Jeremy Fish’s portraits of famous people are accompanied by amusing tales of their inception.

An interesting multimedia, comic-book take on the portrait will be coming to New York this week. Taking over the Joshua Liner Gallery on Thursday and running through 26 July is Listen and Learn, from San Francisco-based illustrator Jeremy Fish. The exhibition will feature his baroquely cartoonish interview-portraits—acrylic on hand-cut wood panels—of famous people, figures of authority, strippers, skaters, and more. Each image has an accompanying story with it that you can listen to on an mp3 player or through a set of headphones that sit nearby, treating you to the inspiration behind the work. Snoop Dogg’s tale, for instance, involves getting his “worm” out.

So instead of having to read a long description about the work, a right old chore, you can instead admire the colorful and fun pictures undisturbed while the ribald history of its inception fleshes out the details. It’s like a strange hybrid comic form, but with only one panel to illustrate the tale. Anyway, admire a selection of the bold prints above and also watch the video about the project too, animated by Kamp Grizzly.
