Jonathan Brand has taken the 1969 Ford Mustang and created a life-size paper sculpture out of it. As you’ll see from the images, the work looks like a 3D drawing writ large and that’s because it began as a 3D drawing. Brand brought this digital Pinocchio to life by using a large format printer to print out the drawings as flat inkjet prints, then assembling them into the car shape from the numbered and labelled pieces, and cutting and gluing them together. The resulting sculpture is called One Piece at a Time, which he says is “a nod to the Johnny Cash song about a Detroit assembly line worker who dreams of someday owning one of the Cadillacs he assembles and decides to steal one, one piece at a time, and reassemble it.” It’s a meticulous effort as Brand recreates many components of the car, from the engine to the seats, tires, rims, even the window wipers.
