So TED 2012 is in the books, and it looks like it was another successful year for the conference that bills itself as the ultimate melding of innovative geek minds. TED has always been a bit cornball because of how lovably nerdy it is. Between the talks and parties, it’s basically a tech ashram full of feel-good innovate-y vibes, and that’s totally cool. But now TED’s had John Boswell remix TED, and, well, I just can’t take it seriously. Boswell is creator of the excellent “Symphony of Science” videos that are collectively screaming for you to take mushrooms and watch, but in this light, it’s ridiculous. Taking already cheekily-nerdy talks and upping the “greater meaning” and “world philosophy” and “grandiose cute-tech-will-save-us-all” quotient is dumb. TED is already on the bleeding edge of the cliquey meta-cool continuum; autotuned motivational quotes just push it over into self-fellation.
