Sometimes, sudden-death overtime isn't quite so sudden.Game 6 of the first-round series between the WHL's Everett Silvertips and Victoria Royals took a total of eight periods to be decided, but it was finally ended when 20-year-old Cal Babych busted in on a partial break and made good on his opportunity, sliding the winner past Royals goaltender Griffen Outhouse on the Silvertips' 75th shot of the night.It was the longest game in WHL and Canadian Hockey League history, lasting a total 151 minutes and 36 seconds, as the game creeped past the midway point of the fifth overtime period. The previous CHL record was held by the Victoriaville Tigresand Hull Olympique, as the two clubs battled through a five-overtime thriller of their own which lasted 146 minutes and 31 seconds in a QMJHL playoff game on March 19, 1999.As in any lengthy overtime battle, the goaltending on both sides was the story of the night. Victoria's Outhouse stopped 72 of 75 shots in the loss, while Philadelphia second-round draft pick and 2017 Canadian world junior netminder Carter Hart turned away 64 of 66 shots directed his way. Aside from goaltenders usually stealing the show in these types of games, an unexpected hero is often the one putting the puck in the net to end it.On this night it was Babych, who had amassed just 39 points in 164 games with five different WHL teams since 2013-14.
