Friends, I am sorry to say that Curt Schilling, forever screaming into the Pepe-the-Frog void, is back on his bullshit. As we continue to reckon with the Adam Jones situation in Boston, there has been a vocal and not at all surprising pushback from a certain type of person. First we had the White Dude Who Lived In Boston Forever And Never Once Saw Racism Ever rushing to defend a municipality from the meanies saying bad things about it. Then there was the White Dude Who Is Somehow Concerned About the Chilling Effect of Condemning Racism, And Also Pandering. Now we have White Dude Who Straight Up Called Adam Jones A Liar."I spent most of my adult life in baseball parks. I heard the N-word out of my black teammates' mouths about 100 million times," Schilling continued. "For somebody to talk loud enough for Adam Jones to hear the N-word in center field, other people would have heard it."If somebody did say it, we're going to see it and hear about it, and I would apologize to Adam Jones for doubting him, but until then, I think this is bulls--t. How did no one see or hear this?! In an attempt to help them out, I've done a deep dive into the record to see what turned up. Here's what I found, courtesy of USA Today:"'I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight,'' Jones said disgustedly."Pretty cut-and-dry.Now the question becomes: Why do these Aggrieved White Dudes refuse to believe Adam Jones when he says he was called a racial slur? There are a lot of ways to answer that question and all of them say more about them, than they do Jones. Maybe they are blinded by civic loyalty. Maybe they are naive enough to believe that if they don't see something, it doesn't exist. Maybe they are so self absorbed that they cannot understand the concept of different experiences for different people. Maybe they don't believe the word of a black man, or don't want to believe the word of a black man when it does not align with their own world view.I don't really have any good answers, though, because reactions like these are not logical from human beings capable of reason and empathy. When someone says out loud "Man, I had this really shitty thing happen to me today," in what universe is your first response ever "prove it"? In what universe does a person allege that they were mistreated by another person and you want to bust out the Zapruder film and fact check it? In what universe is it possible for Adam Jones to get called a "nigger" and Curt fucking Schilling to take to his janky internet talk show and say Jones is the one looking for attention?For normal human beings, the response to "Man, I had a shitty thing happen to me today" is always—always—"Man, that sucks.
