A veteran UK TV broadcaster has sparked anger for comparing a Black doctor’s hair to an alpaca on live TV, and asking if he could “pet” it.

Eamonn Holmes, 61, made the comments to Dr Zoe Williams, a guest on ITV’s This Morning on Thursday.

Williams was on the programme to preview an upcoming segment on tips on staying healthy, including “how your health can be benefited from gardening and even alpacas,” – an animal that has improbably been a big fixture in UK newspapers this summer.

In response, Holmes said: “Your hair reminds me of an alpaca today, so it does. You just want to pet it, don't you, it’s very alpaca-ish.”

“Don’t touch my hair,” a smiling Williams replied.

Writing on Twitter later on Thursday, Holmes apologised “to anyone who was offended.”
