French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for the coronavirus, his office has said.

The Élysée Palace said Macron, 42, was tested after showing symptoms. He will isolate for seven days but continue to work and carry out his activities remotely.

"The President of the Republic has been diagnosed positive for COVID-19 today," the Elysée said in a brief statement.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex is also isolating as a potential contact case, but he is not showing any symptoms.

This week Macron has held a weekly meeting with his cabinet and welcomed Portugal’s Prime Minister António Costa to the Élysée.

The French president is among a number of world leaders to have tested positive for the virus this year, including UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US President Donald Trump, and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

According to coronavirus data from the John Hopkins University, France has almost 2.5 million cases of coronavirus, and nearly 60,000 deaths.
