Witness the Rise of London's Latest Duo, Dorsia

In their first ever interview, the UK duo describes their path from electro bands to sets at Fabric.

Dorsia is the brainchild of long-time friends Adam Reid and Andy Watson. You may recognize this intriguing duo by name, but their sound is harder to place. Although the mysterious producers are fresh to the scene?with only one release to date?their history as musicians runs deep. "My older brother used to run electronic music weekenders (the Deadbeat parties) which is where I was first exposed to the real underground at around the age of 11," Adam explained. "Both of us have been influenced by our older brothers. Mine gave me my first turntables with a stack of electro records to practice with."

Inspired by their siblings, Dorsia entered into electro-oriented bands as percussionists. Like many, their appreciation for dance music was born from experiences on the dance floor. But their inspiration for Dorsia came from out-of-genre artists like Radiohead and Aphex Twin. One of their earliest memories was when they saw Massive Attack live. "We went to Glastonbury together when I was 18 and we made sure we went straight to the front. We both loved them and those experiences are now apart of what we do," recalls Adam.

Prior to Dorsia, Andy had been releasing less-structured, garage music under a separate alias. But was also influenced by the Chicago and Detroit house DJs from the nineties. "[With Dorsia] we're trying to make music that has a clear structure and a strong rhythm," said Andy.

They completed their first tune in 2011, but it was with Ghana that Dorsia took full form. "I went to Andy's one day to get in the studio—he played me a loop of 'Ghana' and I said 'that's the one.' After that, we built the track in about an hour."

With a series of domestic shows behind them, Dorsia is working on refining their production before entering the realm of international touring artists. "Ghana" was later remixed by a series of artists, which to Adam, has been a learning experience of its own. "Working with the senior label artists is good because even if you think you've grasped something, learning something new can help. It's a new piece of knowledge. Sometimes you realize that you've been doing something the wrong way for the past five years, and they teach you a quick shortcut."

Their tactics in the studio are constantly evolving from knowledge that can only come from trial and error. "There is a lot of stuff that just gets ditched, especially if you're on your own for a bit and you've been consistently listening to something that you realize is crap. You have to rest and then come back to it fresh. Then you can really work with it again," said Andy. "I think that is one thing that we've learned to do in our short time together. It's definitely not to over-listen to things," added Adam.

"If something is getting repetitive in your head, as soon as you step back from it you can think about it much more logically. You can have more direction, rather than just getting obsessed with finishing something. If it doesn't work, you move on."

As they look towards the future?and to another set at Fabric this March?the duo will be busy cooking up a series of releases. "Every track we do is getting better, there is no lack of creativity. We know what sound we want to make and it seems like things are getting a bit quicker on the production side of things. We keep learning with each track," stated Adam.

Within London they're quickly rising up the ranks. "London is a constant reminder of all the amazing shit out there," said Adam. "It's about fun. We met in our youth in London and brought what we know to the studio. It was always about going out and enjoying the music. We want our music to be enjoyed in the same way. When we play a show, we don't plan it out very much; it's loose. We see what the crowd is up too. If it's going well, then we keep on that sort of trajectory."

Their Bygones EP out on Chasing Unicorns on February 2, keep your eyes on these guys because London has yet again churned out two amazing producers.
