Iceland qualified for Euro 2016, the first major tournament the nation has ever participated in. They drew a tough lot in their first match in St. Etienne, having to play Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal, and went down a goal in the first half. Iceland struck back early in the second half, however, as the Portugal defense fell asleep and completely lost track of Birkir Bjarnason.Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson got the ball on the right side of the pitch and flung a cross right in front of the keeper. As the ball went in, both Portugal defenders followed Kolbeinn Sigthórsson as he went to the far post side. This left Bjarnason completely alone. He volleyed it past the Portugal keeper with his ankle. It happened at such close range that Rui Patricio had no chance at stopping it and could only dive and watch has it bounced past his gloves.Iceland is the smallest country to qualify for the Euros, and with a population of roughly 330,000 they more closely resemble the city of Leicester—perhaps good news?—than an international power. Of those 330,000 people, some 30,000 have made the trek to France to cheer on their team. So far, they've gotten a good show.[ESPN]
