The Sensorium: A New Center For Immersive Art Opens

A new state-of-the-art space dedicated to showcasing immersive and interactive audiovisual work opens in Montreal.

The Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) in Montreal are preparing the grand opening of a new fixture to their building called the Sensorium. A dome-like structure, it promises to be the “first permanent immersive theater devoted to artistic creation and visualization activities.” The Sensorium will be a transdisciplinary center dedicated to the cross section of all art forms—ranging from visual to food art—but specifically focusing on the immersive qualities of those forms.

While digital technology continues to push the immersive and experiential possibilities of art via audiovisual displays and projections, many of the pieces created do not have a permanent home. In many cases, they last within the span of a single performance and utilize spaces that are not necessarily optimized to present these kinds of technically demanding works. SAT aims to provide a space where artists will be allowed to explore the full potential of audiovisual and digital art forms as both a tool and a theater where artists can experiment and expand on the possibilities of their work.

While it is laudable that the SAT wants to provide a space dedicated to this kind of art, part of the appeal of audiovisual or new media art is its fleeting, public nature. Still, it’s interesting to see what kind of transformations the medium might undergo when given a permanent home. Regardless, the project’s strong focus on immersion and interactivity makes the Sensorium both important and intriguing.
