Timmy Cahill Put On A Clinic In Melbourne City's Crushing FFA Victory Over the Wanderers Last Night

Just a taste of what's to come as Timmy opens his account for City in their 4-1 FFA Cup demolition of A-League heavyweights the Western Sydney Wanderers. "Tonight's a big night for us as a club, as a city," he said.

The dream is coming to fruition for Melbourne City fans. Timmy Cahill's partnership with fellow City forward Bruno Fornaroli looked all-conquering last night as the pair combined to put two goals past the Western Sydney Wanderers in their 4-1 quarterfinal demolition in the FFA Cup.

The 36 year old Cahill was personally head-hunted by the head of the Australian Football Federation, David Gallop after turning down a lucrative contract extension with former club Huangzhou Greentown in China. His two year deal with Melbourne City, estimated at around $7 million, is the second biggest in A-League history, behind Italian great, Del-Piero.

He is now in the process or repaying that. With City up 1-0 Cahill found himself on the end of a cross at the far-post. With an open goal beckoning he instead deftly picked out City's Uruguayan import, Fornaroli, who slotted their second goal. Cahill showed his class again just prior to halftime when he laid on a special backheel once again for Fornaroli before he was brought down inside the box by Wanderers defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley.

In a show of camaraderie that will delight City fans, Fornaroli gave his penalty to Cahill who calmly buried it to open his account for the club.

Their efforts were arguably overshadowed by City's Danish defender Michael Jakobsen and his second minute screamer, however. The 30 year old seized upon a deflection and fired home a remarkable bicycle kick from just inside the area to give City the ascendancy, from which they never looked back.

Speaking on the Fox Sports telecast after the match, Cahill told viewers the game "was a big night for us as a club (and) as a city."

"We said we wanted to lay down the foundation for the season. it was important we started with intensity and more importantly that we showed up because we had probably nine new starters tonight. (I'm) really proud of the boys," he said.
