RAVE-OFF

May the best festival win.

This coming weekend Electric Daisy Carnival is returning to its East Coast home at the Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, a mere 100 mile trek from the grounds of the first ever US-incarnation of Mysteryland, in Bethel Woods, NY, setting up a battle royale the likes of which dance music world has never seen. Why is it such a big deal that these two festivals are happening at the same time?

It all goes back to Summer 2013, when global event producer ID&T announced plans to bring Mysteryland from Europe to the hills and valleys of Upstate New York at the site of the original 1969 Woodstock Festival in Bethel. Rival promoter Insomniac tried to secure a permit for the same weekend in Saugerties, NY - the site of Woodstock '94 - to host the New York installment of EDC but the town rejected the request. Undeterred, Insomniac quickly announced that EDC would still host its fest, closer to NYC than they had originally hope, but at the same time as Mysteryland during Memorial Day Weekend.

Of course, this festival face-off isn't just about mysteries vs electric daisies or the aesthetics of green grass vs parking lot macadam or even who has the biggest headliners. Insomniac is the neon jewel in the Live Nation crown and ID&T is the flagship of EDM conglomerate SFX. Memorial Day Weekend, 2014 is the first time these two new rave juggernauts go head to head with competing events in the same market.

Lucky us, we get to watch it all unfold here.
