Gold Coast Producer GXNXVS Goes Straight To The Top Of The Class

GXNXVS gives a masterclass in modern beats and r&b.

You know, sometimes it actually does take a genius. Or, in this case, a GXNXVS. The Gold Coast-via-New Zealand producer has a special talent for blending hazy hip hop soul and smoky electro pop. You can hear it on his first EP Lately, featuring remixes of Banks, Drake, and The Weeknd, and on his collaborations with Vanessa Elisha and CVIRO. So when we needed a new mix for the week we knew who to call. GXNXVS is a smart guy, and knows any fool can make something complicated. So this one is easy, just some of the best atmospheric R&B and electronic slow jams he's heard and made.  It doesn't take a genius to figure out this is pretty special. Listen here, and read below our chat with the mastermind behind the mix.

Thanks for the mix. What would you say are the ideal listening conditions for this one?
GXNXVS: This mix is one for those late night drives home, where you can just zone out and not have to focus on anything other than the music. There's a few throwback tracks in there and just some of the newer stuff that I've been rocking with lately.

You were born in New Zealand, but have lived here for a while now. You mentioned that LA might be next - what plans do you have at this stage?
Yeah New Zealand will always be 'home' but LA is definitely next on the list, I'm heading out there in September for a month or two to work with some people. It's going to be epic. Though more than anything I just can't wait to get in a real studio setting, as well as all that other shit you'd expect to be excited about when going to LA.

This mix definitely gives a good overview of your current musical interests, but in general what artists and labels are you drawn to at the moment?
At the moment I'm so down with what OVO Sound is doing with PARTYNEXTDOOR and Majid Jordan, that is my shit right there. Their new EPs are so dope. Apart from finding like ten dope random people on Soundcloud a day, I've also been bumping a lot of 90's R&B like Immature, Soul 4 Real and Missy Elliot, that type of stuff. It's too good.

Keep up to date with GXNXVS here.
