Peru: Where All Your National Geographic Dreams Come True

I remember when I saw photos of ‘The Lost City of the Incas’ while flipping through a faded National Geographic at my grandparents’ house. The ripped images of an overgrown city remained pinned to my bedroom walls way after the Alanis Morissette and JTT posters had been torn down.

My main reason for travelling to Peru was always Machu Picchu, and my way of getting there was the Inca trail. The ancient stone pathway snakes its way up the side of the Andes into the clouds before dropping back down to the lost city. It was a hard trek, but it was worth it to see the staggering beauty of a place I'd always dreamt of visiting.

But the country is so much more than just Machu Picchu. Stretching from the lush jungle of the Amazon to the salt and sand perfection of its northern beaches, Peru is also home to Lake Titicaca, a vast ocean of a lake which sits atop the Andes. In its centre, floating villages made from layers of reeds stacked upon each other bounce with a wet squelch beneath your feet.
