Young Fathers’ New "Toy" Visual Stars Little Kids as Powerful Leaders

It's an impactful, tongue-in-cheek statement from the Glasgow trio.

Mercury Prize-winning trio Young Fathers are no stranger to making a statement, and yesterday they dropped a visual which does just that, albeit partly in a tongue-in-cheek way. The band put out a video for "Toy," from their record Cocoa Sugar, released in March this year, and it stars little kids as politicians. Which… suggests exactly what you think it does.

In a press release, director Salomon Ligthelm said "I honestly just really like the idea of seeing dictators behaving like spoilt little children – pissed with the world, because things aren’t going their way. Looking at the political climate of our time, I’d say truth is certainly stranger than fiction."

It's an artfully-shot video, the frenetic pace of which matches the song's percussive-feeling energy. It splices footage of the kids marching around looking busy and lip syncing Young Fathers' blistering lyrics alongside historical archive footage, and the result is pretty impactful. Watch it above.
