When Lil Yachty introduced us to his world on Lil Boat last year, we met three sides of the rapper: benevolent narrator Darnell Boat, bratty spitter Lil Boat, and Auto-Tuned, celestially blissful Lil Yachty. Much of his output since has been in that last mode, all grins and spaced-out beats. His material for Teenage Feelings has even veered into full-on pop. But Yachty is from Atlanta, and that’s the realm of rap that his Lil Boat persona inhabits on new track “X Men.”
If a song has the letter “X” by itself in the title, it’s hard. If a song title references superheroes in the title, it’s also hard. This does both, so prepare for 808 destruction. And sure enough, there is no melody here, just buzzing sub-bass and a looming hook from Texas rapper Evander Griiim. There’s also the piercing line “you don’t have a place in my heart, bro,” which is a very Yachty way to express not fucking with someone. Stream “X Men” below.
