5 Revelations from the Vimeo Awards

What we learned, and why we’ll go back.

1. World Records are getting much easier to break…depending on the scope of your creativity.
We participated in breaking the world record for the Longest Video Waterfall last Friday. Look for the video to come, and visit the Universal Record Database to set your own.

2. The issue of copyright will continue to be murky.
Where is the line drawn between reinterpretation and outright plagiarism? How much money does that kid with a webcam out in North Dakota have to make before an artist deems it necessary to charge him for his borrowed soundtrack? A Creative Commons license is a start, but we’re still waiting for the law to catch up with the 21st Century.

3. The future of multi-media is transmedia.
It’s not enough to just make videos, photographs, and write blog posts. Transmediasts like Lance Weiler create characters and storyworlds that transcend any one medium and re-imagine narrative altogether.

4. What is a conversation? Plus, what other definitions are changing…
Have we become over-sharing monologists through social media? Can we afford to live in a world without that means of expression?

5. We can anticipate more and more data porn.
In the midst of the data deluge we’re currently living in, bold visionaries like Nicholas Felton and Sosolimited are attempting to make sense of it all and to tell stories with numbers. Other times, they just make some really, really cool looking infographics, and that’s ok too.
