Underground Caves Captured in 3D (VIDEO)

Take a digital fly-through of the cavernous maze beneath Nottingham.

The city of Nottingham in merry England is not only home to the nemesis of folklore hero Robin Hood, but also to over 450 man-made sandstone caves that run beneath the city. Ranging from medieval tunnels used to capture the despotic ruler of England to pub cellars, dungeons that held Scottish kings, cesspits, and subterranean 19th century butchers, the caves give a remarkable buried snapshot of historical England.

The Nottingham Caves Survey is currently in the process of 3D laser scanning each cave to record its shape and surface details, and the results are visually stunning. Take a look at the slideshow above to see the laser-scanned images of secret tunnels, which seem to float between transparent buildings as silhouetted pockets of light. Then watch the video below for a fly-through of the aforementioned medieval tunnel that watches like a video game.

If you want more, you can check out the survey’s website for further exploration of these sunshine-colored labyrinths.
