How To Discretely Turn Off Any TV: The TV-B-Gone Jacket

Make magazine’s Becky Stern creates a fashion-forward solution for our media saturated times.

Sometimes even internet-savvy media geeks just want some good old-fashioned social interaction. In a world overflowing with celebrity scandals, Twitter updates, and infomercials, television has created a culture of addicts who need a constant, over-stimulating information flow. The amazing TV-B-Gone remote control has helped mediate this problem for a few years now, but its conspicuous nature poses some problems when you need to be discreet for fear of upsetting your local bar or restaurant owner. Editor for CRAFT and Make magazines, Becky Stern, created a covert way to escape the distracted dinner date with her DIY TV-B-Gone jacket.

While the TV-B-Gone usually comes in the form of a remote control or keychain, Stern embedded the standard TV-B-Gone kit in her chic biker jacket and hid the circuit board underneath her lapel. Now she can inconspicuously turn off any television in the vicinity simply by zipping her coat, leaving those screaming Yankees fans at the bar distraught, but unaware of the culprit. Family dinners overpowered by a TV in the room are no longer your only option.

Stern has published a handy how-to on the Craftzine blog, allowing you to replicate her work and take matters into your own hands. All you’ll need is a TV-B-Gone kit and a few items from your local hardware store: conductive thread, sewing supplies and standard soldering tools, and before you know it, you’ll be able to turn off any television in the room.
