Perhaps insufficiently embarrassed by the Godot-meets-Beavis Clint Eastwood performance art debacle, the GOP is attempting to get its message across with another extremely awkward stunt. Republicans have launched a ‘Break up with Obama’ campaign that centers around a well-produced video segment featuring a woman dumping a cardboard cutout of the president.Much like Clint’s weird chair schtick, it’s another supremely outdated comedy bit that feels even more outdated when transposed onto YouTube and viewed your laptop screen. It doesn’t come across as funny; just weird. Also, Buzzfeed points out that the woman featured in the vid is a Republican staffer, so the entire premise doesn’t make much sense. Now, the GOP is trying its hand at cultivating a viral video, but the tired gag isn’t likely to inspire much willful sharing—as of this writing, the video has less than 500 views, despite having its own website, www.breakupwithobama.com, and the supposed might of the GOP media team behind it. Fail.It just demonstrates yet again how clumsy the GOP is with new media—it’s only truly skilled provocateur in the medium, Andrew Breitbart, is dead. And he relied on shamelessly edited video collages to give his pieces the necessary firepower. No, the only Republican-focused video to go viral this week, as far as I can tell, is this one:And it’s not exactly the one Romney’s campaign staff want to see breaking 1 million views. And it’s going viral again thanks to the far-savvier folks at Upworthy—they’ve given new life to this 2011 clip. And it’s of Romney making a mess of a chance encounter with a gay Vietnam veteran.
