Pumpkin-Spice season. Decorative-Gourd Season. Fall-Foliage Season. For too long, the autumnal spotlight has been shining in the wrong direction. The best part about autumn is that it's Hot-Pie Season, and it doesn't particularly matter what kind of pie: sweet potato, apple, peach, pecan, any and every berry, the list goes on.

Pie is almost always amazing. The world is filled with bad cakes and dry pastries, but we bet you can count on one hand how many times you've had a shitty slice of pie.

The only problem with pie is that the dough can require precision and a considerable forearm workout. If you don't know what you're doing, you risk having subpar crust. The solution? This apple and pear crisp with walnut streusel, which is every bit as delicious as pie, but is absurdly easy to make.

RECIPE: Apple and Pear Crisp with Walnut Streusel

Kelly Fields, the rockstar pastry chef behind Willa Jean, came up with this recipe, so you know it's legit. Happiness is two fruits that compliment each other perfectly, just the right amount of lemony freshness, a crunchy walnut-y crust, and—like any true comfort food—a shit-ton of butter to keep you all warm and cozy inside.

So grab a tub of vanilla ice cream, find something to binge watch on Netflix, and start off Hot-Pie Season right.
