VICE Sports World News Roundup: September 11

Start your day with VICE Sports. Here's our morning roundup of the sports news from around the world.

Good morning, America. Welcome to the VICE Sports World News Roundup. Be sure to stop by daily for your morning headlines.

It's the 11th of September, 2015, and Sepp Blatter is still president of FIFA.

Chelsea is still under fire for its loan policy. The team shipped 33 players out to various European teams this offseason. One of those players, Mohamed Salah, joined Roma. Last season, he was on loan at Fiorentina. Recently, Fiorentina filed a formal complaint with FIFA in which they allege Chelsea is in breach of contract for loaning Salah to Fiorentina's rival.

Der Kaiser, Franz Beckenbauer, the only person to have won the World Cup as both a player and a coach, turned 70 today. Germany weekly Die Zeit called him the most famous German since Goethe. (I know what you're thinking, but Hitler was Austrian.)

Spain knocked Germany out of the European Basketball Championship, 77-76, and now all of Germany is worried Dirk Nowitzki—certainly one of the country's most famous and beloved active athletes—will never play international basketball again. (Link in German)

More information is leaking out about the player unrest at Manchester United. According to the Independent, one of the major player grievances has to do with how Louis Van Gaal treated Rafael, whom he froze out of the first team before selling him to Lyon. Rafael played more than 100 games at right back for United, a team that now has a very suspect defense.

The players are probably a lot happier about this:

Former Manchester United and Liverpool players, and presumably lots of fans, are upset because, for the first time, the two teams are set to play each other without a single locally-raised player on either team. Rooney was born in Liverpool but he doesn't count because he plays for United.

Belgian cyclist Kris Boeckmans is now out of a coma. He'd been in an induced coma since crashing last month in the opening stages of the Vuelta a España.

The U.S. Open was delayed due to rain. Serena Williams and a bunch of dudes (I mean, who else is even playing, right?) will continue her march toward history this afternoon.

It was a tough week for Rally racing. Seven spectators died—and many more were injured—last weekend in Spain. But the show goes on. Things are underway at the Rally of Australia.
