Giants Offense Gifts Jacksonville Easy Touchdowns

The Giants give up a touchdown on a wild scrum following an Eli Manning fumble in his own red zone.

The New York Giants are wearing red and white uniforms today, but we usually see this kind of haplessness from dudes in green and white. On second-and-seven from the Giants 15-yard line, the Jacksonville pass rush swallowed Eli Manning. As he spun to the ground, he lost control of the ball and watched it roll toward his own end zone.

A couple of Giants had a chance to scoop it up before the Jaguars pounced on it, but Rashad Jennings could not hang on to the ball after jumping on it and it remained uncovered on the turf between a Jacksonville player's legs for a good couple of seconds before Jennings grabbed it. He only had it momentarily, however, as J.T. Thomas came crashing in, jarred it loose, and recovered for the touchdown. It cut the Giants lead to 21-10.

The announcers seemed to think that Jennings was done in by his own awareness that merely landing on the ball would result in a safety and attributed the touchdown to that awareness. Which…sure, he was trying to make a play, but giving up seven points is still worse than two.

The Jags have since scored two touchdowns (and two missed a two-point conversion), the second of which was another fumble recovery, this time a 41-yard return off a Larry Donnell fumble, to take a 22-21.
