Hello, Rodaidh here again. Next week I'm in the studio for a couple of days with Publicist. Publicist is the baby of Sebastian Thomson (Trans Am, Dead Kids) and features Ian Svenonius on vocals. These guys have played together in Weird War for a while but the Publicist sound is something different altogether and, having just received and heard demo versions of the songs we're going to be working on, I can say that I am seriously excited about these tracks. In fact I was so blown away with the demos themselves that I decided, with their permission of course, to put one of my favourites, "Momma," up here.Often, no matter how strong something turns out it can be easy to lose the charm of that early demo version. If you've ever heard a Trans Am record or seen Thomson live then you will be in no doubt of his drumming skills. But here they are almost completely drowned out by a cheap drum machine. Also the vocals are smothered and almost unintelligible at points, but this works amazingly well alongside the lyrical content, like a kid face-down in bed on the morning of the first school day, pillow over his head, crying that he doesn't wanna go. It all fits together so well that it's kind of difficult to imagine it sounding any other way, but we'll see what happens. They're playing in London later this month at Off Modern on the 26th, joined by New Look, me, Goodbye! Mother and a bunch of others. Maybe see you there? Here's the demo version of "Momma":RODAIDH MCDONALD
FYI.
