Issa Rae has come a long way since Awkward Black Girl's web pilot episode back in February 2011. But she hasn't forgotten her roots, even if she may have been pressured to do so. After ABC turned down her joint project with Shonda Rhimes and multiple delays with HBO, her new show Insecure will finally premiere on October 9.

On the show, which includes former Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore as a consultant, Rae will navigate both her professional and personal lives with a lot of effort, but the most endearing part of it all is how she never quite gets it right—whatever "it" might be. Within the span of the two-minute trailer, she delightfully goes from being "Miss No Fucks" to being "Miss I Give All the Fucks." Unhappy with her relationship, exiting her 20s, and vaguely microaggression'ed at work, Rae's character exists within many different spaces but always finds herself to be the outlier, hence her titular awkwardness and insecurity.

It's an experience that many black women deal with, but the marvelous thing about Insecure is the show's potential to expose this vulnerability to a wider audience, undermining stereotypes such as black women's supposedly infallible strength to withstand any and all pressure. The show promises not only to tackle race head on but also gender issues in both serious and comic ways. Life might be imperfect, it might get messy. Thankfully, there's Issa Rae to help us laugh through these things that might otherwise make us want to cry.
