Amazon's New Philip K. Dick Series Is Going to Be Nuts

The first trailer for Electric Dreams, Amazon's upcoming sci-fi anthology series based on the stories of Philip K. Dick, premiered at New York Comic Con on Friday—and it looks like a robot's wet dream.

The show is basically Amazon's response to Black Mirror (or Dimension 404, if you only watch Hulu for some reason). Each of the first season's ten episodes tells a different narrative, all adapted from Dick's short fiction.

Along with some gorgeous visuals and a few freaky-ass androids with glowing eyes, the trailer flaunts the series' massively star-studded cast, featuring everyone from Bryan Cranston to Steve Buscemi to Anna Paquin to Janelle Monáe, and more. Cranston, who stars in an episode called "Human Is," also executive produced the series.

"We told all of our writers to use the original material as a springboard to your own re-imagining of the story—change the genre, language, place, whatever you like," the former Breaking Bad actor told Variety. "But keep the core of them or idea behind it and enhance that and see how that affects not a Cold War period when it was written, but now. How does it affect the modern-day audience?"

Dick's already one of science fiction's most adapted authors—his books have inspired Blade Runner, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, Total Recall, and Amazon's own Man in the High Castle, among others—but Electric Dreams still has a seemingly endless well to choose from. And even if it did run out of fiction stories, Amazon can always just dip into Dick's real life, since there are plenty of batshit tales in there that could easily make for some good TV.

The trailer only gives us fragments of storylines, so it's hard to tell which of Dick's stories the first season will focus on. Will someone attempt an adaptation of the seemingly unadaptable book The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch? Will one episode be full of UBIK advertisements? What the hell would a TV version of Valis even look like, anyway?

We'll have to wait a while to find out, though, since Electric Dreams isn't set to premiere on Amazon until sometime in 2018. Until then, give the trailer a watch above.
