Last Thursday, VICE hosted screenings for The Conjuring in New York City and Los Angeles. The film—which follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in their efforts to help banish a dark, evil presence from a family’s home—is all based on true events. The Warrens were real paranormal investigators in the 60s and 70s and worked on infamous cases such as the Amityville Horror. This story, unlike Amityville, was kept under wraps by the Warrens due to the profound and damaging trauma it caused them.

Over 1,000 fans of scary things RSVP’d for the screenings in NYC and LA and both the AMC Empire and the Landmark 12 theaters were filled within minutes. With a line stretching down the block, the premiere definitely created a buzz, as latecomers tried desperately to get tickets of their own. Most of the moviegoers considered themselves seasoned horror veterans, yet some still found themselves unprepared for the film’s more terrifying moments. Regardless of past experience, The Conjuring definitely had an effect on everyone in the audience; the crowd emerged from the film with their high expectations exceeded and their hearts pumping extra fast. The Conjuring is set to release on July 19. Make sure you check it out, but be prepared.
