The problem with taking drugs is that they disintegrate your body and your brain. When I heard about a new type of drug that you listen to rather than injest, I was all up for giving it a try. Binaural drugs are basically a sort of mind-altering, pseudo drug of the future. Based on beat frequencies and their effect on the sub-cortical auditory system of the brain (whatever that means), these trusty MP3s claim to induce altered states of consciousness, and make you 'high' by triggering the release of loads of endorphins in your brain. This all sounded like bullshit to me, but my friend Hannah is always banging on about how amazing they are and how they magically get rid of her period pains. So I decided to give them a try. I downloaded a few here, turned off the lights, closed my eyes, and let the sound waves travel out of my headphones and into my brain. There are loads of different soundscapes, each promising different effects ranging from lucid dreams, deep relaxation, euphoria, increased awareness, the elimination of insomnia and stress relief. The first drug I tried was called Hypnosis. Surprisingly, it worked. I felt completely relaxed, almost meditative. Before I knew it, an hour had passed and I felt really zoned-out and confused by everything around me, but in a good way.Next I tried Rave. This one was not so nice. After about five minutes of listening to it I felt the extremely strong desire to hurt someone. It sounded like nails on a chalk board, except more distorted and drawn out. I forced myself to listen to it for ten minutes, after which I felt as if I'd just downed ten Red Bulls and had a vibrator implanted in my skull. Which I guess is a pretty fair approximation of a rave, headspace-wise.The high you get off these audio drugs may not be the same as if you double-dropped ecstasy, but you can get a pretty decent warm, smiley buzz going without having to turn into a gurn-monster. I highly recommend them as a healthy alternative to the more common, brain annihilating drugs, although they're even better when you're blasted out of your skull.* Read more about binaural drugs hereKARLEY
