Drone Camera Offers The Best Look At Whales Since Moby Dick

Forget the news about those decomposing beached whales and finish your week with a drone's eye view of some gentle giants.

This week, news has been making the rounds of the twin blue whale corpses in Newfoundland, Canada that are decomposing, filling with methane, and risk blowing up in a mighty burst of blubber. While the photos are certainly hard to look away from, we found a video that has us closing the week with some healthier images of whales ingrained in our heads: Drone Whale Watching Hawaii.

Eric Sterman, whose epic drone's-eye surf video we featured this past January, is back with another GoPro-drone fusion—this time used exclusively to stare down at some gentle blue giants. The footage was taken from over 500 feet above the Oahu water, enabled by a high-intensity lens from Ragecams. Sterman also used a Dronefly and GoPro Hero 3+, allowing him to shoot as far as a mile offshore.

Though all of the whales in his awesome video look plenty health, we rated them on a scale of 1-10, guessing how close to exploding these guys are, with 10 signifying: yeah, that whale is definitely going to blow up.
