Wife Isn't a Hockey Fan, but Allows Husband to Name Their 5 Kids After Leafs Players

She sounds like a keeper. Kadri, named after Leafs forward Nazem Kadri, was the newest addition to the Amey family.

After the birth of their daughter, Kadri Lee Amey on Oct. 27, a couple from Kingston, Ontario, now have five children named after former and current Toronto Maple Leafs players.

In addition to the newest member of their family—named after Toronto forward Nazem Kadri—Misty and Dave Amey's four other children also follow the Leafs-centric name pattern. Rounding out the family is Justice Tucker, 11, Angel McCabe, 10, Domi, 9, and Colton Orr, 5. For the non-Leafs fans here, they were named after Toronto favourites Darcy Tucker and Tie Domi, Bryan McCabe, and former tough guy Colton Orr, who retired earlier this year.

If you think these parents are two crazed, over-the-top Leafs fans, you'd only be half right.

Misty is not a Leafs fan at all and she doesn't even like hockey, or sports.

"It's not just a Leafs thing, it's a hockey, sports thing. I'm not really, never was, into sports. When he first mentioned it, it didn't sit very well and then the more I heard it, it actually sounded kind of nice. It was something that grew on me," she said in a recent interview with the Toronto Star.

Misty is obviously a team player, not once thwarting her husband's dream of having each one their offspring named after role players from a team toiling in the depths of futility for the past 50 years.

The big, household names are not Dave's cup of tea. He prefers his kids to be named after the grindy, role players that fans have grown to love for other reasons besides winning, skill and talent.

"I don't want to knock the superstars like the Kessels, the Crosbys, but it's not about the name on the back. You play for the logo on the front and that's what I felt those players did the best," he said.

Kadri, the latest addition to the family, got the family a shutout from the 26-year-old Leafs center she was named after.

As for Misty, the names she was once not so fond of have grown into a source of education, family bonding and hockey enlightenment.

She said she's "learned a lot about the sport through her children's names and now watches each Leafs game with her husband."

Staying with the course of choosing hardworking, blue-chip type players rather than stars, according to Dave, former Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer is a top candidate for the next name if (and when) kid No. 6 comes along.

"If I were to have another baby next year," said Dave, "there's no way on earth I'd pick Auston Matthews."
