Byte The App: Must See Apps Of The Week 4/12

Make music on the move, explore an interactive history of mathematics, fly like a crow, control your dreams, and enjoy an industrial techno app album from Lords of Acid.

The app stores are teeming with new releases, but who has time to go through them all? We do, and we’re bringing you a selection of the most interesting, creative, and innovative apps each week. Submit your suggestions for next week in the comments below.

Figure [iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad]

If you’re a fan of making electronic music on a smartphone, you’re in the right century because there’s at least one or two (million) of them circulating around out there. The selling point for this one is that it’s quick and easy and designed to be used on the move on tablets and smartphones, giving you a selection of drums, bass, and lead synth controlled by the touch interface.

Minds of Modern Mathematics [iPad]
You may hate maths because it reminds you of crappy lessons taught by a bore while you looked out the window at the shimmering weather and the freedom that eluded you. But this app from IBM will hopefully erase those memories as it delves into the history of mathematics and looks at how it changed the world and permeated art, science, and culture. It’s based on a 50 foot long wall installation from the 1961 Mathematica: a world of numbers…and beyond exhibition sponsored by IBM and created by legendary designers Charles and Ray Eames.

Crow [iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad]

You are a crow caught in a battle between good and evil, like all crows secretly are. In this game you have to make decisions, battle enemies, and grow your magical powers while flying through enchanting lands with pretty visuals as you while away the days and nights locked in a world that isn’t your own. Since Hitchcock’s movies crows have got a bit of a bad rap, so it’s good to see this is redressing the balance.

Dream: ON [iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad]
You may have sweet dreams about your iPhone, but keep those to yourself. This app aims to monitor and influence your dreams by playing “soundscapes” while you’re snoozing and is the brainchild of psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman, who has created the app so people can participate in a mass experiment to see how we dream. You can buy different “soundscapes”—ocean, rainforest—which will then be activated in REM sleep.

Lords of Acid [iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad]
Lords of Acid are a techno band who have had a 12 year hiatus and have now released an album in app form that they’re calling “part game, part interactive comic book, part concept album,” with art work that takes its aesthetic from the underground comic scene and music that’s industrial and dark. In a nod to times of old when people would listen to an album while reading the liner notes and staring at the cover, each song comes with its own mini-game which has an “undercurrent of humor, satire, sex, fun and an animated visualization of the lyrics.”
