Lumpens Looks Up to Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman [Video Interview]

The Korean designer discusses his influences and excitement at our Seoul event.

Korean creator Yong Suk Choi aka Lumpens said, "One project is called Charlie's Tree. That was inspired by the movie, Adaptation by Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze. I heard that Spike Jonze was coming, so I wanted to dedicate it to him as a present." The project responds to the audience. In the video above, you can watch it as it reacts to participants "watering" it with their attention and causing it to grow.

The second Lumpens piece in the video from our Seoul event requires one audience member at a time to sit on a chair and watch as the features of his or her face are rearranged in a projection before them.

At the end of the interview, Choi says, "There are many artists on the Creators Project list that I admire. I can't believe that I can be on the same list with them. So, I feel very happy and thankful." We're delighted to have him and many of our other Korean and Chinese creators that we'll be introducing to you this week and next through their work and live performances. We adore Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman, but we also like to see fresh stuff like what Lumpens and Peng Lei are creating. Work that is all the more interesting in part because it is so different from the popular American artists we know and love.
