Let Arcade Fire Take You on a Tour of Your Suburb

The interactive new video for “The Wilderness Downtown.”

Arcade Fire, Google, and Chris Milk joined forces to produce an interactive video set to the band’s track “We Used To Wait” that also shows off the capabilities of HTML 5. You’ll need to use Google Chrome to experience it, so download and install if you haven’t got it. Then go to the website here and enter the zipcode you grew up at. When you do and the video starts, you’ll be treated to aerial and street level views of your hometown, courtesy of Google Maps and Streetview, incorporated into the video of the song, intended to send you on a nostalgic virtual trip down memory—and other—lane(s) that you’ll fondly (or not) remember. It’s like a scene from a movie of your life that you’ve whimsically daydreamed while you should be working. My own suburban stomping ground is in the slideshow above. You can also send a postcard to your younger self offering hard-earned advice, or just verbally abuse them if you wish. It’s all part of the Chrome Experiments series, have a look on their site for details on the technology used in the video.
