Artist Shane Willis brings us this transhumanist update to M.C. Escher’s “Hand Writing Hand.” And here we thought that Escher’s original was a mere flight of fancy—look at that! Two 2D hands drawing each other into existence! What high-concept whimsy! Wrong.
Now we know, of course, that Escher was predicting the singularity, that moment in the then-far-off future when machines would become capable of reproducing themselves thanks to fast-accelerating artificial intelligence. Those aren’t just hands—they are robot hands.
Also, everybody knows that Rene Magritte foresaw the rise of cyborg footwear.
The Magritte homage is also by Willis; check out the rest of his stuff here.
