A memo written by then-FBI director James Comey in February suggests Donald Trump asked him to shut down the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, the New York Times reports.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go," the president allegedly told Comey. "He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go."

Flynn resigned in February after it came out that he had lied about conversations with the Russian ambassador. The memo––which was not viewed by the Times but was read to one of the paper's reporters––is the clearest evidence so far that Trump actively interfered with the FBI investigation into his new administration.

The Times previously reported that on January 27, Trump asked Comey for a pledge of loyalty and was rebuffed. Comey was fired on May 9, and one of the reasons since given by Trump is that he believes the Russia investigation to be a bunch of made-up bullshit.

"While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn," the White House said in a statement to the Times. "The president has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey."
