WNY’s “Socialights” Takes Video Games to the Dance Floor

Made exclusively for THUMP, this track is a basement dwellers dream.

Video game music is the high spirited, somewhat close relative to techno and early dance music. Although not identical, the two have noticeable similarities in their makeup. We know that we can take techno out of the club and still adore it; but, can you extract the techno-infused video game sound from its world of Tetris cubes and Farmville crops and still dance?

WNY has proved that you can.

Edmonton-bred WNY (pronounced "Winnie") is Matthew Willox, a producer whose background in video game audio and music production has led him to a sound of his own.

"I take what I can from techno and footwork so that there is something to relate to, then I decorate that to make it mine," he says.

He produces with an adherence to live sounds—where original samples from drum machines, modular synthesizers and acoustic instruments are built and pieced together by him.

WNY's track "Socialights" was made exclusively for THUMP. A topsy-turvy track with colourful layers of everything that makes both techno and video games downright awesome.
