Start Your Weekend Right With NYC Label Safer At Night's Stellar First Release of 2016

Lawrence Lee (AKA Total Fitness)'s 'The Chase' EP includes a trippy sample recorded in a Berlin bar's bathroom, of all places.

Back in January, I threw a party called Vapelandia in a Brooklyn fried chicken deli with 23 of my favorite DJs—including Safer At Night co-founder Total Fitness, who played a killer house and techno set with local DJs Peter Fonda, Abu Ashley, and Nadia. Before he went on, Total Fitness told me that he would be debuting his new DJ alias—his real name Lawrence Lee—during his set, feeling like it was time to break with the old and start a new chapter in his career. This past Friday, Lee released his first EP—a three-tracker called The Chase—under the new name, and you can stream it in full below.

"I recorded that trippy weird vocal [for "Acceptance"] the bathroom of a bar in Berlin I stumbled upon while peeing as I waited for Luca [Curses] to take out money at the ATM," Lee told me over email. "I feel very strongly about the ambient song as well, and was inspired by a Trent Reznor soundtrack I was listening to a lot as some personal things that were going on. The title track is more of a club focused tune thats been working very well in my sets. "
