Steve Jobs made a brief comeback from medical leave today to unveil the next generation iPad. The big chief was thin but looked healthy and in good spirits espousing the virtues of his gamechanging product while taking snarky jabs at his “flummoxed” competitors. 2011 isn’t the year of the tablet, Jobs mused. It’s the year of the iPad 2. What went down was mostly what we were expecting. This is all you need to know.

  • A new A5 duocore processor is supposedly up to twice as fast as last year’s A4 while having comparable energy
  • Graphics will be 9x faster
  • So we’re still playing with a heady 10 hours of battery life with “a month of standby”
  • Front and rear video cameras plus FaceTime. Is videoconferencing going to become the norm?
  • 33 percent thinner. Yeah, it’s pretty sexy
  • Optional HDMI cable outputs at 1080p plus HDMI mirroring ($39)
  • Black and white models. Both will be available at launch, Jobs joked to applause and chuckles
  • The iPad 2 ships Friday the 13th of … March — 26 other countries March 25th

Pricing remains unchanged as did the carrier situation (AT&T and Verizon, 3G). Apple also took the opportunity to launch a new line of uber minimalistic cases, iOS 4.3, and some cool iPad apps. iMovies looks robust software for amateur video manipulation while GarageBand seems a legit mini production studio.
