Andy Murray Gives Funny, Touching Post-match Speech, Thanks Pregnant Wife for Being a "Legend"

Andy Murray got choked up as he thanked his pregnant wife Kim for being a "legend" the past two weeks.

Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 to secure his sixth Australian Open title. Murray is now winless in the five Aussie Open finals he has played in, and has dropped four of those matches to Novak. So when he opened his speech, gripping a plate instead of a cup, saying "I feel like I've been here before," he's not bullshitting. Murray went on to congratulate Djokovic on his win and recent form, thank the sponsors, the fans, and virtually everyone associated with the event. Then he addressed his pregnant wife, Kim Sears.

Kim was due to give birth to the couple's first child any day now, and it had been weighing on Murray's mind since before the tournament began. Coming into the Open, he said he would leave the tournament if she went into labor. She didn't, and he kept winning, so in his final words he got very choked up as he thanked his wife. "And finally to my wife, Kim…she's gonna be watching back home just now. You've been a legend the last two weeks, thank you so much for all of your support and I'll be on the next flight home."

Murray was reportedly true to his word, ducking out of the post-match press conference after about five minutes and making a beeline for the airport.

Adding to the difficulty of the tournament was an earlier scare for Kim's father Nigel Sears, who also coaches Ana Ivanovic. Sears collapsed in the stands during Ivanovic's third-round match against Madison Keys and had to be hospitalized. Murray considered dropping out of the tournament at that point, but Sears was given a clean bill of health and cleared to travel back home, so Murray continued on to the Final.

After Murray gave his speech, Djokovic took the podium and offered some well wishes. "I would also like to wish you and Kim a very happy and healthy delivery of your baby and I hope you will experience a feeling like no other before, because that's what happened to me and my wife, so I wish you all the best."

Aw, sports are nice.
