Flavia Pennetta Wins U.S. Open for First Career Grand Slam, Immediately Retires

Flavia Pennetta won her first grand slam at the U.S. Open today and announced she would retire.

Flavia Pennetta beat Roberta Vinci in straight sets 7-6 (4), 6-2 today to win the U.S. Open for her first grand slam win in 49 appearances. About halfway through the video above, before concluding her victory speech with Robin Roberts, she announced that one month ago she made the decision that this would be her last grand slam; this is the way she "would like to say goodbye to tennis."

So the 26 seed went on to play the best tennis of her life, upsetting No. 2 Simona Halep to get into the finals, where she clearly thought she was going to be playing Serena Williams before her long-time friend Roberta Vinci knocked her off. Send-offs don't get much better than that. Vinci, by the way, was a little salty at the announcement, saying "now she does it!"

Hilariously, after Pennetta won the final point and celebrated with her trainer, manager, and fiancé Fabio Fognini (who upset Rafael Nadal earlier in the tournament), Chris Evert actually said this win might prolong her career. Oops!

It's not completely over, though, she's going to finish the year

Pennetta tells Mats and Barbara that she plans on playing the rest of the season.
