The Short Film Set to Burial's "Rival Dealer" is Gritty and Sad

Auteur Ben Dawkins captures the melancholy of Burial's latest work.

One of the most salient aspects of Burial's music is that it can evoke so many conflicting emotions. Video crew The Sweet Shop's intrepid auteur Ben Dawkins has taken on the task of interpreting the title track from Burial's most recent "Rival Dealer" EP in a short film titled Dealer.

Set in London and centered around a night in the life of a drug dealer named Curtis, the film contrasts his touching home life in a council estate with the seedy background of the glamorous party life our culture is often pre-occupied with.

The angst-ridden mood of the story builds with the song through interactions with Triad gang members and impatient punters before arriving at a startling climax. All Curtis wants to do is go home but this ain't no fairy tale.

At a mere 11 minutes, Dealer is a well-made and darkly beautiful endeavor worthy of Burial's music and mystique.
