“I don’t remember making a decision on the album, it was more like messing around and eventually something would or wouldn’t happen. We waited for that ‘something’ to happen,” Phoenix lead singer Thomas Mars says in the beginning of this video on the making of the soaring, maximalist track “1901.” “We tried, without really knowing it, to let chance have it’s way, and the tracks create themselves, even if it wasn’t conscious.” We wish our subconscious would produce such gems.
