Video Fins and Virtual Butterflies

A digital recreation of their fluttering flight.
October 8, 2010, 3:25pm

In this artwork, Flutter, by Dominic Harris of Cinimod Studio, a series of 88 video fins recreate the fleeting movements of a butterfly in flight. It’s a digital update of the zoetrope, which captivates the viewer with its flickering motion. The piece is responsive too: as the viewer moves around it, the butterfly’s movement changes; reaching out toward it causes a reaction reminiscent of a domino effect, with each panel reacting as the viewer’s hand passes. It reminds us of UVA’s LED sculpture Triptych, featured at our events, and it looks just as addictive. Check Cinimod Studio’s website for more details, and take a look at the video below for a demonstration.
