The dance of enhancement pirouettes onwards as 3D comes to ballet. It’s been gleefully and gimmickly taken up by every other genre it seems, so why not this? Why not, indeed. A program called Dance Dance Dance has been shot in 3D for Sky’s spanking new 3D channel, and is being shown this month, featuring ballet, Bollywood dancing, swing, and several more. The aim is for the leaps and bounds found within dance to be brought jumping off the screen, which makes sense, if you’re into it. And it’s not just the small screen that is realizing the potential of 3D and dance, German indie director Wim Wenders has shot a new movie Pina in 3D, about modern dance choreographer Pina Bausch, claiming on the Guardian’s website that “3D and dance are made for each other.”It seems 3D has many mistresses with directors who aren’t just into explosions, weird trees with souls, and overgrown Smurfs warming to the medium, what with Werner Herzog and Martin Scorsese both having 3D movies coming out. Strangely, more high-action directors like Michael Bay and Christopher Nolan have expressed a dislike for 3D films. Could 3D be the new jump cut for the more discerning director? Is it going to be reclaimed from the blockbusters by art house cinema? Possibly, but there’s more than enough 3D glasses to go around.
