Here They Are: The Vimeo Award Finalists

Radical Friend’s among them, along with a dancing He-Man.

Video website Vimeo, YouTube’s chin-stroking, turtle-necked, Sartre reading cousin, has announced the finalists to its first ever awards. Culled from 6,500 applicants by a selection of judges that included M.I.A., Evan Roth, David Lynch, Morgan Spurlock, Roman Coppola, Shane Walter, and a whole bunch of other noteworthy individuals, they’ve been whittled down to 45 videos in five categories. And what a great bunch of videos they’ve chosen, from Radical Friend’s video for Yeasayer’s “Ambling Alp” to Pixels by Patrick Jean, which you would’ve seen if you made it along to any one of our events, along with The Tarantino Mixtape by our favourite mash-up collagists Eclectic Method. Keeping them company in the Remix category is the above video called Fabulous Secret Powers featuring the master of the universe in his secretive mild-mannered pastel-colored form of Prince Adam, singing along to 1990s grungers 4 Non Blondes—with guest appearances from Skeletor and Man-At-Arms.

All the finalists’ videos will be screened at the two-day Vimeo Festival in New York on October 8th and 9th, where the winners will be announced. Judging for the Experimental category, filmmaker and photographer Charlie White said, “I was extremely impressed by the breadth and range of the experimental films, from the momentous made morbid to the domestic made dance.” While Lucy Walker, a documentary filmmaker suitably judging for the Documentary category said, “It was a true pleasure to serve on this jury and feel refreshed and inspired by the creative energy of the work submitted. Short form documentary work is evolving, and this feels like exactly where it’s happening and where it’s at. Let’s keep it coming!”
