This might be the oddest music generator we’ve ever seen—combining the mundane task of ironing with playing music definitely charters previously unexplored territory. Matti Niinimäki’s new project transforms an iron and an ironing board into a wireless music controller that generates beats and vibrating bass with a swift flick of the wrist. The instrument, which is completely wireless, works by pairing grayscale values with different notes, making patterned shirts the most noisy…and white shirts the most boring. An accelerometer also calculates the length of every move giving the user feedback with vibration and LED. Not only does Matti probably have the freshest pressed clothes in Finland, but his multi-tasking brings a whole new fun factor to catching up on household tasks. Now all he needs to do is mass produce his invention and housewives everywhere will be turning their laundry rooms into underground clubs. See more of Matti’s genius work on his website.
