We’re so used to the ease of our adaptable smartphones these days that we’ve almost forgotten the time when playing electronic handheld games meant saving up to buy a whole new LCD device—not just a downloadable app or ROM cartridge—each time you wanted to play a new game. It seems barbaric and primitive compared to today’s standards, but so it went. One of those beloved games was known as Game & Watch. According to Wikipedia, designer Gumpei Yokoi was travelling on a bullet train and saw a bored businessman playing with his LCD calculator, which inspired the eventual Nintendo Game Boy creator to invent a watch that doubled as a game device. The fondness with which the Game & Watch is remembered was no doubt one of the reasons that Hipopotam, a Polish design studio, created Pica Pic, an online retro handheld game museum where you can play some of those old titles from Game & Watch and other copy cats that sprung up to cash in on the craze. The best part? The site will work just fine on the device you already have, so there’s no need to revisit the difficulties of investing in a new console.
