One of our Swedish contributors accidentally walked in on Stockholm police shooting some guy Friday afternoon. Here are a couple of images, a video and a brief account of what she saw:At around 2PM this afternoon, I was in Stockholm showing some visiting friends around. When we passed Skeppsbron, the lovely waterfront walk on the outskirts of the Old Town overlooking the Baltic Sea, searching for an infamous vagina statue located on a wall next to the bar Zum Franziskaner (this is a totally different story), a man, who appeared to be slightly intoxicated and quite clearly hostile, walked out from a narrow alley. According to the newspaper Aftonbladet, the man had been threatening people with a knife.
Within a minute, a police car pulled up, and a policewoman and two policemen jumped out of the car right next to us. Pointing a gun at the man, in the same direction as my friends, myself and everyone else standing outside Zum Franziskaner, the policewoman yelled, “Stop right there!” The suspect answered with a drunken, “Fuck you!” and kept walking. The policewoman got real mad and told him once more to, “STAY RIGHT THERE!” The suspect still didn’t stop, ignoring her once again. So she shot at him.
At this point, pretty much all the tourists in the area had gathered to see what the fuss was all about. The policewoman shot at the man again and shouted at him to lie down. She seemed nervous and filled with adrenaline. It was probably the most action movie-like event that’s happened in the history of Skeppsbron since the Middle Ages. When the backup police force arrived, they managed to finally get the man to lie down on the ground. According to local newspapers, the police shot the guy in the leg. However, the two shots we heard seemed to have only hit the ground. An ambulance arrived within ten minutes.
