We Asked Australian Porn Stars What They're Doing on Valentine’s Day

"Porn sex is stunt sex for entertainment value. Relationship sex is about expressing my love and desire for my partner."

Porn is a sort of universe unto its own. It's a place where any lame pretext is enough to fuck anyone, anywhere, at any time, and all sorts of social boundaries don't hold anyone back. But what's interesting here—and this is a facet of porn explored in a million documentaries and ex-performer autobiographies—is that porn stars have actual lives. They have lovers and relationships, as well as breakups and times when there's no one around. It's this notion that made us wonder what porn stars do on Valentine's Day. Do they see it as a big day for lonely dudes on webcam, or does it represent something real, and something romantic?

Summer Knight, Sydney

VICE: Hey Summer, what's the plan for Valentine's Day?
Summer: I've just come out of an absolutely horrible one year relationship so I'll be celebrating my freedom this Valentine's Day and making sure I look after myself. I have a couple of bookings lined up so I hope I can bring some cheer to my clients on what can be a sad day for some. Then, I'll be hanging out with my girlfriends, eating good food and drinking nice wine and probably retiring home to a hot bubble bath and masturbating to my fav porn!

Are you a fan of Valentine's Day or do you think it's a joke?
I'm a big romantic so I love Valentine's Day, some years I have someone to lavish my affection on and other years I lavish it on myself and remember how lucky I am to have shared many beautiful moments with many beautiful people.

My fav Valentine's Day memory was a few years back, I was the luckiest lady in the restaurant that night. Everyone was out with just one lover but I sat there with two boyfriends! Both my polyamorous lovers got along fine with each other. It was great.

Hey Madson, how do you feel about Valentine's?
I absolutely love it. Seeing so many people romance and seduce their lovers is amazing. This Valentine's Day I will be spoiling my Valentine with pepperoni pizza and a marathon of their favourite tv show in some of my finest lingerie (with some pretty awesome love making). I think the key to romancing your Valentine is to tailor the spoiling to something that the two of you can really enjoy. It doesn't always have to be about fancy dinners and roses or cost the world.

You said you'll get up to some "some pretty awesome love making." How do you maintain a sexual romantic relationship when you have sex for work?
Porn sex is stunt sex for entertainment value. It is made to look good but not feel good for the performers. I love doing porn, but generally it's not actually good sex because the focus is on the viewer and the final product.

In my relationships sex is about expressing my love and desire for my partner. It's about wanting to be as physically close with them as possible. As vulnerable as possible. Its emotional sex. I think the fact that I have many different forms of sex in the course of my career means that I'm more aware of the many different uses and outcomes for sex. Sex can be an activity, an escape, or a distraction but it can also be a relationship builder. Being aware of the different forms and uses of sex can help people get more out of their sex lives and lead to stronger closer relationships.

Lucie Bee, Sydney

Hey Lucie, what's the plan for Valentine's Day?
My plans for Valentine's Day… Well I'll be filming. I'm making some videos with some very funny guys I know, the duo Danny and Sean. Not porn, mind you. I mean, I'm sure they'd be up for it, but I think we'll focus on the funny first.

Do you think Valentine's Day is about true love?
I think Valentine's Day is great in the sense that it often pushes people to make time for each other. It's easy for us all to turn around say, Hey, you should always make time for the person or people you love but, often in day-to-day life that can be really difficult. Having a day that you can just stop, plan something special around and enjoy is great. It also gives as all permission to be a little bit cheesy, silly and romantic, to try something new or totally indulge. We all need to do that once in awhile.

Angela White, Melbourne

Hey Angela, what are planning for Valentine's?
I'm in a couple of relationships at the moment but I plan on spending the 14th making sure my single fans aren't using their tissues for tears; I'll be doing live masturbation shows on webcam all day.

"Tears" sounds negative. How do you feel about Valentine's generally?
Some people may be surprised to learn that I am a very romantic and sensitive person. Nonetheless, I think Valentine's Day is a sham. If you love someone, you should be letting them know with your words and actions on a regular basis, not waiting for these constructed days to waste a bunch of money on insincere gestures. Valentine's Day reifies gender stereotypes and places expectations on both men and women to be happily matched up at all times regardless of sexual preference.

Gigi Allens, Los Angeles

What have you got planned?
Last year on Valentine's Day two dozen red roses were accidentally delivered to my house. This year I don't think I'll be so lucky.

So… you don't feel good about Valentine's?
To me Valentine's Day is just another Hallmark holiday. I wouldn't say that I'm cynical (though I might add, I've been called a misandrist three times this week so men in general are not in my good books). But I think that when you are truly in love with someone everyday feels special and happy.

Are you truly in love with someone?
I have many special people in my life. Why limit oneself to the singular?
